  • William J. Callahan, 86, of Lassellsville, Town of Ephratah, New York, passed away on Sunday evening, November 18, 2012, with the love and support of his family surrounding him.
    William was born March 10, 1926, in Brooklyn, New York, a son of the late John L. and Josephine (O'Rourke) Callahan. He attended Bishop Loughlin High School and graduated with the Class of 1943. In 1944, William enlisted in the United States Navy and served during World War II. His rank was Pharmacist's Mate Third Class V6 and earned the Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal. He received an honorable discharge in 1946. Upon his discharge, William enrolled in St. John University. He earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in Accounting and graduated with the Class of 1952.
    On January 19, 1952, William was united in marriage to Dorothy A. Schlang in Ridgewood, New York. They shared a loving union of 60 years together this year.
    William worked at many accounting firms in New York throughout his life. He was formerly employed by Civil Aeronautics of Brooklyn and Long Island areas. Most recently, William was self-employed as an accountant in Lassellsville, NY.
    William was a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph's Church in Dolgeville and Our Lady of Hope in Fort Plain, New York. He had a deep faith within his religion. William was also on the board of trustees for St. Joseph's Church for many years. He enjoyed gardening, farming, cooking, woodworking and taking care of his home. William will be greatly missed by his family, friends and clients.
    He is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy A. Callahan, at home; his loving children, Patricia A. Callahan and her husband, Sergio Arbustini, of Dolgeville, NY, Geraldine A. Franck, of Illinois, Carolyn A. Fitzgerald and her husband, Dennis, of Hawthorne Woods, IL, Christopher J. Callahan and his wife, Kathleen, of Rockville Centre, NY, Martin J. Callahan and his wife, Karen Brittain, of St. Johnsville, NY, and Rebecca A. Gamba and her husband, Franco, of Old Bridge, NJ; seventeen special grandchildren; two cherished great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul F. Callahan, of Garden City, NY; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
    William was predeceased by his beloved son, William "Billy" J. Callahan, Jr., on September 27, 2010, and several brothers and sisters and in-laws.
    Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours that will be held on Tuesday (today), November 20, 2012, from 4-8 p.m. at Miller-Plonka Funeral Home, 30 Wolf Street, Dolgeville, New York. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, November 21, 2012, at St. Joseph's Church, 31 North Helmer Avenue, Dolgeville, NY, at 10:30 a.m. with Father Dennis Murphy, Pastor, officiating. Interment will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery, where William will be laid to rest.
    The Callahan family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Johnsville Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, St. Mary's Healthcare and the St. Johnsville Ambulance Corps for their care and compassion for William.
