For the first time this season, Herkimer County Community College took an early lead Thursday and the Generals breezed to a 59-34 win over Broome Community College
The Generals (4-2) had trailed at halftime in all but one of their first five games, including back-to-back losses to University of Connecticut-Avery Point and Finger Lakes Community College entering Thursday. Whitney Brown had the first seven points against Broome and Herkimer led 29-12 at the break.
“It’s always nice when you jump out 7-0,” Generals coach Brad Gouger said. “We did a nice job early. Our defense created some offense.”
Brown, who has been slowed by a hamstring injury, had 11 points before halftime and led Herkimer with 15.
“We’ve got some kids who are banged up and they got a chance to rest a little,” Gouger said. “Some other kids got a chance to play a little more which is nice.”
Samantha Randio added nine points for the Generals. Kayla Guidi, a freshman from Herkimer, scored her first three college points.
Kelcie Marshall had five three-pointers for Broome and led the Hornets (1-5) with 17 points.
Herkimer is home again Saturday for a game against North Country Community College. The women tip off at 1 p.m. as the first half of a doubleheader.
