  • The Herkimer Magicians will not have long to wait for a chance at revenge for their first loss of the season. Less than  24 hours after being beaten by Little Falls, the top-seeded Magicians drew the Mounties as their opponent for the quarterfinals of Section III’s inaugural Class C-2 playoffs.
Sixteen of the section’s 24 Class C teams qualified for the expanded playoff field and have been broken into two divisions based on enrollment. Herkimer (5-1, 4-1 C East) is the lone league champion in the Class C-2 bracket; Class C South Canastota, Class C North General Brown and Class C West Skaneateles are all in Class C-1. Skaneatales and General Brown are both undefeated.
Little Falls (2-4, 2-3 C East) needed a win Saturday to avoid a three-way tie-breaker that would have put Holland Patent in the playoffs and came through with a 20-12 victory over a depleted Herkimer squad. The Mounties’ reward was the No. 8 seed in Class C-2 and a Friday night road trip to neighboring East Herkimer for a playoff rematch against the defending Class C sectional champions.
The winner between the Mounties and Magicians could see another familiar opponent in the semifinals. Frankfort-Schuyler (4-2, 3-2 C East) finished third in Class C East — The Maroon Knights were beaten by Herkimer and defeated Little Falls in overtime after squandering a 24-0 lead — and drew the fourth seed. The Maroon Knights are home Friday for their quarterfinal against Mt. Markham (3-3, 2-3 C South). Mt. Markham finished in a fourth-place tie with Morrisville-Eaton/Hamilton in Class C South and got in on the strength of a 12-9 overtime win against the Warriors.
The other Class C-2 quarterfinals send Lowville Academy (4-2, 3-2 C North) to second seed Waterville/Madison (3-3, 3-2 C South) and Syracuse Institute of Technology (2-4, 2-3 C West) to Tully (4-2, 3-2 C West) for a rematch of a game Tully won 30-22 to open the season.
Class C South champion Canastota is the top seed for Class C-1. Notre Dame of Utica, the lone Class C East team in the upper bracket, is seeded sixth and plays Friday at General Brown.
The class C-1 and C-2 championship games will be played Oct. 19 or 20 at a neutral site with the winners playing for the overall Class C championship the following weekend in the Carrier Dome.
