HOLLAND PATENT 38, ILION 30
One week removed from a 13-game losing streak, Holland Patent’s Golden Knights have themselves in position to claim a spot in Section III’s expanded Class C playoffs.
The Golden Knights (2-4, 1-4 C East) beat Ilion 38-30 on the road Friday night and now await the outcome of Saturday’s game between first-place Herkimer and the Little Falls Mounties. A win by Little Falls would give the Mounties (1-4, 1-3 C East) the league’s fourth playoff spot in the 16-team C-1/C-2 postseason field. A Herkimer win would create a three-way tie for fourth place and Holland Patent clinched the tie-breaker Friday.
The Golden Bombers (2-4, 1-4 C East) entered the night needing a win to clinch their own playoff berth and ended it knowing their would be no playoffs in Ilion this fall.
“When we began the week we stressed that we have to worry about what we can control,” said first-year coach Rich Zacek whose Golden Knights beat Mohawk 48-18 Saturday for the program’s first win since 2010. “What we can’t control is the Little Falls/Herkimer game. What we can control is we needed to win the first half by three points and we needed to win this game.”
Ties between two teams are broken head-to-head results. A three way tie is broken by first-half point differential in games involving those in the deadlock. Holland Patent beat Ilion which beat Little Falls which beat Holland Patent during the regular season. Little Falls and Ilion were tied at 8 at halftime in their game and Little Falls led Holland Patent 22-21 giving Little Falls a differential of plus-one. Holland Patent’s 18-14 lead Friday raised the Golden Knights to plus-three and left Ilion at minus-four.
With the first half checked off, the Golden Knights would not let up. Matt Carroll took the ball 73 yards on the third quarter’s first play from scrimmage and scored the fourth of his five touchdowns.
Holland Patent got the ball back following a 55-yard punt return by Jared Fisher and stretched its lead to 31-14 on an eight-yard touchdown run by quarterback Cody Bliss.
Ilion got back within eight points in the fourth quarter when Josh Olmstead ran for a touchdown and Mykel Farley ran in his third two-point conversion of the night.
Holland Patent took the ball back with 6 1/2 minute left to play and ran the clock down to the final minute before turning the ball over on downs with 21 seconds left. Brothers Laken and Landry Cook tackled Curtis near the sideline for a two-yard loss on fourth-and-seven from the Ilion 25. The Golden Knights were assessed a 15-yard penalty after the play for a personal foul and Ilion took possession at its own 42 with no timeouts. Bryan Bennett threw a seven-yard pass to Tyler Brown who stepped out of bounds to stop the clock near midfield. Bennett dropped back to pass again and was sacked by Nick Dorsino with R.J. Butcher and Steffen Meyers as time expired.
Page 2 of 2 - Curtis ran for 210 yards on 27 carries and Marc Grogan added nine carries for 96 yards.
Farley returned to action form an injury and ran for 110 yards on 24 carries with an additional 34 yards on two receptions. Brown ran for 135 yards and three touchdowns on 19 carries. Bennett, who completed two of the eight passes he attempted with an interception and two sacks, intercepted the only pass thrown by Bliss.
According to coach Jon Cole, the Golden Bombers will play a crossover game on the road Oct. 13 against either Clinton or Adirondack.
