  • Multiple fires that broke out at the former Morgan-Duofold site Wednesday have been deemed suspicious by authorities.
Ilion Fire Chief James Trevett said the building was secured, which led investigators to believe someone broke in and started the fire.
“It’s an abandoned building where kids get into from time to time as well as vagrants. The police constantly patrol the area and we try to keep an eye on the building as much as possible but we can’t see everything all the time,” said Trevett.
The fire department received the call shortly before 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday afternoon.
Herkimer, Mohawk and Frankfort fire departments were called to assist.
Trevett said there were 11 different fires spread throughout the three building complex.
“There were two major fires in the buildings, one broke out on the second floor in building one and another broke out on the first floor of building three.”
Two holes were burnt through the second floor of building one leading authorities to believe the fire began on the second floor, he added.
The fire was brought under control about an hour after authorities arrived on scene.
The last fire crew to leave the scene left at 7 p.m. said Trevett.
    No injuries were reported.
The investigation has been turned over to the Ilion Police department.
