    Herkimer County Community College got off to a fast start Friday and the Generals advanced to the Region III semifinals with 78-59 victory over the Broome Community College Hornets.
    Goey Charles scored eight points during a 16-0 start for the Generals. Broome went more than 3 1/2 minutes without a basket before Lloyd Saunders scored to break Herkimer’s initial run at Jefferson Community College.
    The margin was 10 points at halftime and Herkimer (22-9) never trailed. Charles led the charge with 18 points and seven rebounds while Michael McCray added 17 and seven. Matt Baldwin added 11 points and contributed three three-pointers to the Generals’ 11-for-25 shooting from outside.
    Peter Knudsen had 11 points and 10 rebounds from Broome (17-10) which had split two decisions with the Generals earlier in the season.
    Herkimer plays again Saturday at 3 p.m. against the winner of Friday’s nightcap between Schenectady County Community College and SUNY-Delhi. The championship game is Sunday at 1 p.m.

    MOHAWK VALLEY CC 79, NORTH COUNTRY CC 65
    WATERTOWN, N.Y. — Algeron Torrance scored 27 points for Mohawk Valley Community College Friday in the Hawks’ 79-65 Region III quarterfinal win over North Country Community College.
    The Hawks (22-8) led by 16 points at halftime and hit 58 percent of their shots from inside the three-point arc.
    Roderick Gray had 17 points, six rebounds and five steals, Tymell Murphy had 10 points, 12 rebounds and five assists, and Darien Davis had 10 points and eight assists. Torrance grabbed eight rebounds.
    Gene Bouyer had 17 points, five rebounds and six assists for North Country (16-13). Randy Danso added 18 points and six rebounds.
    The Hawks, seeded third, meet Finger Lakes Community College in Saturday’s 1 p.m. semifinal at Jefferson Community College.

    WATERTOWN, N.Y. — The Lakers of Finger Lakes Community College pulled away late in the second half Friday and defeated Onondaga Community College 93-82 to earn a spot in the Region III semifinals.
    The teams were separated by two points with four minutes left to play before Finger Lakes, which had led by nine at halftime, pulled away.
    Donnell Jackson scored 20 points to lead five players in double figres for the second-seeded Lakers (24-5). Emanuel Reaves scored 16 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and matched Jackson with four steals, Glenn Taggart also scored 16 points, James Hamill scored 12 points, Drew Bardun had 10 points and five assists and Jeremy Jackson chipped in with nine points and 11 rebounds.
    Heath Stone had 20 points and 10 rebounds for coach Dave Pasiak’s Lazers (20-10). Jesse gates and Andrew Lucio each scored 17 points.
