Four players scored in double figures Thursday as the West Canada Valley Indians defeated Class A Oneida 78-65 and earned a spot in the championship game at the Ed Wadas Classic.
The Indians return to New York Mills’ Beekman Gym Saturday to meet New York Mills at 7:30 p.m.
A steady offensive performance saw West Canada Valley (5-2) score 20 or 21 points in each of the first three quarters and carry a 16-point lead into the fourth.
“I thought that tonight was the first time we put a lot of pieces together,” West Canada Valley coach D.J. Shepardson said. “We’ve done good things throughout the year. Tonight, we rebounded, we moved the ball and we made shots.”
Oneida had the margin down to 11 points in the middle of the fourth quarter before Bobby Davenport gave West Canada Valley some breathing room with his fourth three-pointer of the evening.
Mike Sternberg led West Canada Valley with 20 points and grabbed six rebounds. Davenport added 16 points, five rebounds and three steals, Jordan Yaworski scored 15 points and Alex Williams had a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
“This was a big win against a really good team,” Shepardson said. “(Kyle) Peck is one of the best players we are going to see all year.”
Peck scored 33 points for Oneida (4-4) which meets Hamilton Saturday in the consolation game. Lucas Durant added 15 points.
