  • A fatal one-vehicle accident on the Thruway shut down an eastbound stretch of the highway in central New York for hours and backed up traffic for miles.
State Trooper Jason Jones says he knew of one confirmed fatality from the accident in Herkimer at 1:12 p.m. Sunday. The spokesman did not have information on possible additional injuries. It was not immediately known how many people were in the vehicle.
The accident closed all eastbound lanes between Exit 34A at Chittenango and Exit 30 about 55 miles east at Herkimer for four hours during the busy summer travel day. Jones says Thruway traffic was backed up for about three miles at one point.
Authorities detoured eastbound drivers on to alternate routes. One eastbound lane was opened around 5 p.m.
    Westbound lanes remained open.
