    The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs won Troy Applin’s first start Saturday. The Norfolk State University right-hander pitched the first four innings of the DiamondDawgs’ 6-3 victory over the Elmira Pioneers.

    The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs won Troy Applin’s first start Saturday. The Norfolk State University right-hander pitched the first four innings of the DiamondDawgs’ 6-3 victory over the Elmira Pioneers.
    Mohawk Valley scored first and led 5-0 at one point at Dunn Field. Taylor Wright pitched three innings of relief for the win and Tyler Bray recorded a save.
    The DiamondDawgs took a 3-0 lead in the second inning when Craig Lepre, Sam Dexter and Jordan Serena each drove in a run with a single. Landon Thibodeaux scored on a passed ball in the third inning, Dalton Herrington singled in a run in the fourth and Lepre drove home another in the fifth.
    Thibodeaux had three hits and Lepre was 2-for-3 and was hit by a pitch. Herrington added two hits and is 14-for-27 during a current seven-game hitting streak.
    Chris Kalusdian, Parker Curry and Spencer Henderson all had two hits for Elmira. Chris Knott scored two runs and Brian Bashara drove in two.
    The DiamondDawgs have a doubleheader at home Sunday against Albany’s Dutchmen. The Dutchmen defeated Watertown 3-1 Saturday and have won six consecutive games. Play begins at 5:05 p.m. Sunday at Veterans Memorial Park.
