Mike Urbanski pitched 3 1/3 perfect innings for Amsterdam Monday and the Mohawks rallied to beat the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs 4-3 on Salute to Keith Griffin Night at Shuttleworth Park.
The Amsterdam players paid a tribute of their own to their manager on the night he was honored, coming back from a 3-2 deficit to win for the eighth time in 10 games and complete a sweep of a home-and-home series with their Mohawk Valley neighbors.
Urbanski replaced Amsterdam starter Matt Snyder after Landon Thibodeaux’s two-run  single had given the DiamondDawgs a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth inning. Urbanski ended the inning with a strikeout then struck out six of the nine batters he faced over the final three innings.
Amsterdam rallied in the seventh against Mohawk Valley starter Gavin Culpepper and reliever Zach Williams. Culpepper walked Ronnie Bernick leading off and Kyle Barrett followed with a hit. The runners advanced on a bunt and John Nogowski was walked intentionally to load the bases. The tying run scored when Culpepper hit Jordan Ebert with a pitch.
Williams relieved Culpepper with the bases still loaded and reigning Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League Player of the Week Dylan Smith at the plate. A wild pitch from Williams allowed Barrett to score the go-ahead run.
Williams fanned Smith and Shane Zimmer to end the inning and finished with three strikeouts in 1 2/3 hitless innings.
The DiamondDawgs had scored first in the third inning. Catcher Craig Lepre was hit by a pitch leading off and advanced from first base to third on a hit by Jordan Serena. Lepre tagged up and scored when Jordan Friend flew out and Mohawk Valley had a 1-0 lead. Trailing 2-1 in the sixth, the DiamondDawgs got a leadoff double from Serena and a Dalton Herrington walk. The runners executed a double-steal ahead of Thibodeaux’s run-scoring hit.
Keith Skinner hit a two-rum home run in the fourth inning to give Amsterdam a 2-1 lead. The home run was the Mohawks’ league-high 22nd of the season and the first hit by Skinner. Eleven players have homered for Amsterdam this season; seven teams, including the DiamondDawgs, have fewer than 11 total home runs.
Serena and Barrett were the only players with multiple hits Monday. Snyder and Urbanski combined for 12 strikeouts and two walks.
The DiamondDawgs return home to Veterans Memorial Park Tuesday for a game against Utica Brewers. They are home again Wednesday for a 5:05 p.m. doubleheader against Adirondack with fireworks to follow.
