  • The Genesis Group has named its very first “Gems of Distinction.”
The program is designed to promote businesses and organizations in a six-county region that believe in a “future begins today” philosophy, Genesis Executive Director Raymond Durso told local and state officials during a ceremony Friday at the Gems Along the Mohawk tourism and retail center in Herkimer.
Receiving the recognition were the F.X. Matt Brewing Company, Utica College, Nirvana Natural Spring Water, Bassett Healthcare Network, Herkimer Diamond KOA and Beech-Nut Nutrition Corporation.
Durso said they all exhibit the criteria of “creating unique sustainable efforts, developing team creativity and collaboration, displaying exception leadership, advancing regional commitment and being economic generators.”
The gems will be featured in a 3-D profile for one year in the new Genesis Group East Room at Gems Along the Mohawk, which was dedicated during the ceremony, and be featured permanently at the center thereafter.
Each year, Genesis plans to name six new gems from the Regional Economic Development Council district, which includes Fulton, Herkimer, Montgomery, Oneida, Otsego and Schoharie counties.
“What happens in any of these six counties is important to all of us as we work together for a better Mohawk Valley region,” Durso said.
