  • Mohawk grabbed a spot in the Mohawk Valley Fast Pitch Softball League’s championship bracket with a pair of wins Monday but the weather put the showdown between the league’s top two teams on hold.
Lightning prompted the postponement of Monday’s later session on the final scheduled night of regular season play  at the David P. Whalen Community Park. The game pitting the two remaining undefeated teams — Little Falls and Herkimer — was among four that were rescheduled for Thursday to keep play on schedule for next week’s playoffs.
Mohawk, Little Falls and Herkimer will compose three-quarters of the championship bracket Monday. Fort Plain split its two decisions this week, losing 6-2 to Mohawk before defeating St. Johnsville in an abbreviated game; the Hilltoppers currently sit in fourth place awaiting Frankfort’s results Thursday. Fort Plain defeated Frankfort earlier in the season and owns the tie-breaker; Frankfort would need to win both of its game to move ahead of Fort Plain.
Mohawk clinched its spot in the championship game by beating Fort Plain then added a 4-1 win against Ilion to knock. Ilion, a 16-0 winner against St. Johnsville in its first game of the evening, needed to beat Mohawk to remain in playoff contention.
After Mohawk and Ilion defeated Fort Plain and St. Johnsville, respectively, the second set of games was interrupted once by lightning and play was stopped again shortly before 8 p.m. Repeated lightning strikes on the northern horizon prevented play from proceeding and the decision to postpone the later games was made before heavy rain entered the area.
The Herkimer-Little Falls game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start Thursday, along with a game between Poland and Frankfort. The later games are Little Falls against Poland and Herkimer against Frankfort.
The championship bracket plays first Monday with semifnals at 5:30 p.m. and finals at 6:45 p.m. The other four teams — Ilion, St. Johnsville, Poland and either Fort Plain or Frankfort — will play at 8 and 9:15 p.m.
