  • People from across the region are welcome to celebrate Herkimer County’s agricultural and rural history on Saturday, Oct. 6, when the 2012 Family Day at the Farm will take place.
Scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Raycliff Farm at 795 Snells Bush Rd. in the town of Manheim, this year’s event will include a mix of classic favorites and new attractions. The Family Day at the Farm will be free and will offer a range of hands-on activities and demonstrations centered on agriculture.
Manheim Town Supervisor John Haughton, who sits on the organizing committee, said all aspects of agriculture and farm life will be on display on Oct. 6, adding the event will take place rain or shine.
“There was a time when most everybody was involved in farming somehow, but that just isn’t the case anymore. The day will allow people to understand agriculture better,” Haughton said last week.
Activities at Herkimer County Family Day at the Farm will include games, raffles, demonstrations, hay rides, contests, youth organization presentations and live music. Additionally, a number of vendors will be on hand to display their products, and various farm animals will also be on display.
Haughton added the milking contest between area lawmakers and other well-known residents will return, and a new activity will have children milking a faux cow. The cow is currently being constructed by Haughton and Manheim Highway Superintendent Carl Stallman.
“I think the kids will enjoy it,” said Stallman. “It’s just another fun thing for them to do.”
This year will mark the third year of the event that was originally inspired by the success of the annual Montgomery County Farm Bureau sponsored Sundae on the Farm. Herkimer County Family Day at the Farm also builds on previous events hosted by Raycliff Farm owners Ray Hulten and Judy Mijares, who entertained families with petting zoos and quarter horse demonstrations in past years.
“It’s just a fun day for everyone,” said Haughton. “It’s a day when everyone can come together and share the joys of agriculture with other people from every corner of Herkimer County.”
