A little teamwork helped West Canada Valley senior Alexis Fauvelle reach a personal milestone Thursday during the Indians’ 63-19 blowout victory over the Mt. Markham Mustangs.
Fauvelle’s three-point shot from the left corner pushed the fifth-year varsity starter over the 1,000-point mark. The shot came off a play called by junior teammate Hayley Yager.
“I wasn’t sure what out of bounds play we were going to run,” Fauvelle said. “Hayley called one. She said she wanted me to get it on a three.”
Fauvelle took the ball out of bounds and passed to Mikey Maxwell. Fauvelle stepped onto the court and took a return pass from Maxwell then put up the shot that gave her 1,001 points and her team a 32-8 lead with 4:01 left in the first half.
“It felt good,” Fauvelle said of the shot leaving her hands. “I knew that was the one.”
Fauvelle needed 11 points Thursday and scored seven during an 11-2 run  at the start of the game. A fast break layup 1:30 into the second quarter moved her within a basket of the millennium mark and the milestone followed a short time later. She finished the game with 18 points and 1,007 for her career as West Canada Valley’s seventh female 1,000-point scorer.
“It feels good to reach a goal I’ve always wanted accomplish,” Fauvelle said. “It’s not just the 1,000th point. It’s everything I’ve done over the years to get to this point.”
Everything she has done includes overcoming her smallish stature — Fauvelle is listed at 5-foot-4 — to become one of the area’s more consistent scorers and dangerous all-around offensive players.
“Lex has to work twice as hard as everyone else because of her size,” said Meg Cullinan who has coached all but one of the members of the Indians’ 1,000-point club. “She’s such a great offensive player and she’s a dominating player at the defensive end, also.
“She loves the game and plays hard and she has a great group of kids to play with this year.”
As a veteran leader of the team, Fauvelle is pleased with the progress the Indians have made during the season.
“We’re definitely improving,” she said. “Our team chemistry is getting better, we’re working hard and we’re working together. We’re hoping to finish with strong with some wins to get a good seed for sectionals then see how far we can go.”
Carissa Tasovac added 12 points and six rebounds for the Indians (9-5) and Maxwell scored 11 points with six rebounds and four steals. Morgan Lynch and Courtney Phillips each contributed four steals while Fauvelle had six assists. All 10 uniformed Indians scored.

The Mustangs played at home Friday against Herkimer; they travel to Hamilton Tuesday. West Canada Valley’s next game is also against Herkimer; the Indians take on the Magicians at home Tuesday.
