Mohawk Valley Community College made its run late in the second half Wednesday but was unable to make up a 19-point deficit as Herkimer County Community College’s Generals won 79-70.
The Generals (16-2) have won three games in a row. They entered the week ranked sixth in the NJCAA in Division III.
Herkimer coach Matt Lee was forced to use a timeout after Jeffery Pierre-Louis hit a long three-pointer from the left wing to bring the Hawks (10-7) within 10 points with 3:40 left to play. Pierre-Louis’ shot capped a 23-14 stretch for Mohawk Valley which had trailed 57-38 in the middle of the second half. Herkimer had led by seven points at halftime.
“We got selfish in the last eight minutes of the game,” Lee said. “We gave up too many easy shots, left too many open lanes.”
Lazaro Martinez added a pair of free throws after the the timeout and moved the Hawks within eight points. Herkimer’s defense forced turnovers on the next three Mohawk Valley possessions and stretched its lead back to 13 points. Demetrius Mitchell converted a steal into a layup and fouls by the Hawks led to free throws the next two times down the floor. Mitchell three-pointer from the left corner all but sealed the win with Herkimer leading by 12 points in the final minute.
“We had a chance to put them away and we didn’t,” Lee said. “That gives them life the next time we play at MV.”
Mitchell scored 14 of his game-high 20 points in the second half. Jonathan Feiler had 11 of his 19 before halftime and helped Herkimer take a 37-30 lead. Dequan Jefferson returned to action after hurting his ankle Saturday at Hudson Valley Community College and scored 12 points.
Basil Harley led Mohawk Valley with 18 points while Pierre-Louis and Alexshay Pearce each scored 12.
The Generals play Friday at SUNY-Delhi and return home for a Sunday afternoon doubleheader against Corning Community College. The women play first Sunday at 1 p.m.
