Ryan McCarthy hit four free throws with 50 seconds left in Saturday’s game and the Camden Blue Devils snatched a 58-56 victory from the Herkimer Magicians.
The Blue Devils (5-6) led by 10 points at halftime and as many as 13 in the second half. Herkimer (3-7) came back from a 48-40 deficit early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 48 and 50 then take a 53-52 lead on a Tucker Vogt three-pointer with 2:32 left to play.
“We played well enough to win,” Herkimer coach Jm Babcock said. “The kids on the court played hard but a few mistakes hurt us at the end.”
Vogt scored all seven of his points off the bench during a 16-4 run that gave the Magicians a four-point lead with less than two minutes left to play. His first three-pointer tied the game at 48 and his free throw put Herkimer up 56-52 with 1:58 on the clock.
McCarthy, who scored a season-high 33 points, drove for a basket to get Camden back within two points. Following a timeout, the Blue Devils fouled Dan Graziadei who missed a pair of free throws that would have extended his team’s lead. Camden once again put the ball in the hands of McCarthy who drove the right baseline where he met Demetrius Brown trying to draw a charge. A blocking foul was called against Brown before McCarthy’s shot, awarding a one-and-one to the high-scoring junior. A technical foul was also called against Graziadei, giving McCarthy two more shots and putting the ball back in Camden’s possession.
McCarthy, 4-for-7 at the line to that point, converted all four free throws and took back the lead for Camden.
McCarthy missed a layup as the shot clock expired but teammate Ryan Jones got to the rebound first. Jones also missed his shot and the rebound caromed out of bounds to the Blue Devils with nine seconds on the clock.
Herkimer got the ball back and called a timeout to set up a final shot with 6.9 seconds showing. Jones intercepted a long inbounding pass and was fouled. After Jones missed two free throws, Herkimer inbounded again and Mike Dobek’s heave from halfcourt hit the glass at the buzzer.
Malik Briggs had a double-double for Herkimer with 12 points and 12 rebounds to go with two steals. Adrian Viscomi led the team with 18 points, five assists and three three steals.
McCarthy scored 20 points in the first half which ended with Camden leading 33-23 after the Blue Devils scored 24 points in the second quarter. Six of McCarthy’s points came during a two-minute 10-0 run that gave Camden its first significant lead at 21-12.
Herkimer’s next game is Friday at Frankfort-Schuyler.
