A fiery three-car accident on State Route 5S in the village on Ilion Friday morning left all three drivers with injuries and caused extensive vehicle damage.
Marieodile G. Obreza, 53, of Herkimer, was traveling west on Route 5S in a Cadillac DTS just before 6:45 a.m. Friday morning. At that time, an eastbound vehicle operated by 46-year-old Christine M. Combs, of Ilion, attempted to enter Route 5S via the Barringer Road onramp, said police.
Combs entered the westbound lane, striking Obreza’s vehicle head-on, said police.
A third vehicle, an eastbound Chevy Camero driven by 79-year-old Paul J. Durante, of Utica, was unable to stop and struck Combs’ Nissan Pathfinder, said police.
The vehicle burst into flames with Combs trapped inside. Members of the village of Ilion Fire Department were able to extricate the driver and extinguish the fire, said police.
Obreza and Combs were transported via Ilion Ambulance to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica. Obreza suffered injuries to her head, neck, chest, legs and hand. Combs suffered head injury. Durante complained of chest pain but refused medical transport at the scene.
At this time, Obreza and Combs have been admitted to St. Elizabeth Medical Center and are in stable condition, said police.
The accident remains under investigation and no tickets have been issued at this point.
