Paul Engelhart’s Whitestown Post 1113 scored four runs in the fifth inning and sixth in the sixth Friday to complete a perfect run through District V as a repeat champion with its 11-1 victory over Smith Post 24 at Murnane Field.
Whitestown Post, the top seed with its 15-0 District V record during the regular season, has now won 26 consecutive games within the district. The team will be back in action at Murnane Field starting Wednesday as New York’s defending state champion.
A run scored when Ryan Watson grounded into a force play in the seventh inning ended the game and completed Whitestown Post’s dominant march through the playoffs. Whitetsown Post won three of its four postseason games under the 10-run rule, shaving two innings off each of those scheduled nine-inning contests. Only semifinal opponent Helmuth-Ingalls Post 232 pushed Whitestown Post through the full nine innings.
Smith Post, the No. 2 seed, had a much tougher path to the championship game. Beaten Tuesday by Utica Post 229 in the double-elimination tournament, Smith Post defeated Clonan-Wicks-Staley Post 1000 Wednesday and won two more games against Helmuth-Ingalls and Utica posts Thursday while Whitestown Post had the day off.
Trailing 1-0, Whitestown Post finally solved Smith Post starter Edward Zakrzewski in the bottom of the fifth inning. Dylan Gorski singled leading off, Zakrzewski walked Adam Pexton and Mike Bunal delivered a one-out single to put the top seed’s first run on the board. Whitestown Post then took the lead on an RBI-single by Herkimer County Community College outfielder Brendan Heitz. Two more runs scored on an error and a ground out before the inning was over.
Smith Post reliever Steven Eychner retired the first two batters of the sixth inning before Whitestown Post went to work again. Pexton singled after fouling off a 3-2 pitch and started the rally. Koons walked the next two batters and Heitz cleared the bases with a double into the right field corner. Watson, another Herkimer County Community College player, drove Heitz home with a single and Smith Post made another pitching change following a walk. Dan Smith, yet another Herkimer County Community College player, greeted Caleb Blair with a single that brought home another run. Blair hit a batter to load the bases before Gorski singled  in a run for a 10-1 Whitestown Post lead. The inning ended with Smith Post throwing Smith out at the plate on Gorski’s hit.
The play at the plate left Whitestown Post one run short of the mercy rule. Blair walked two batters and hit a third before Watson sent a ground ball to shortstop. Smith Post got a force at second base for the second out but Watson beat a wild relay throw to first base and Mike Sullivan scored the run that ended the game.

Eychner drove in the Smith Post run with a sacrifice fly.
