Playing in front of a huge crowd for what may be the final game for a long-standing rivalry, the Herkimer Magicians defeated Ilion’s Golden Bombers 26-8 in Friday’s showdown between the last two Class C East championship teams.
The Magicians took the lead on a 25-yard Austin Mills-to-Eric Johnston touchdown pass in the final minute of the first half and shut Ilion out after the intermission.
“It was a nice win,” said Herkimer coach Allan Steele, a graduate of Ilion High School. “To be honest, any time you win, it’s nice because we work hard (but) for me, personally, this was a good win. I thanked the guys after because this game did mean a lot.”
Voters in the two districts head to the polls Wednesday to cast their ballots on a proposed merger that would also include Mohawk. Friday’s gridiron showdown may have been the last between schools whose rivalry Steele saw from one side as a student and player and the other as a teacher and coach.
“We made no hype of it,” Steele said. “... Every game is just as important as any other.”
Mills threw for 112 yards, ran for 83 and scored the other three Herkimer touchdowns. He ran a fumble back 50 yards for the game’s first points and had a pair of three-yard touchdown runs in the second half.
“I though Mills really took over running the ball,” Steele said of the junior who took snaps at quarterback and also lined up as a tailback behind Mike Dobek. “He ran hard and did a good job throwing the ball.”
Matt Borek ran for a team-high 90 yards on 15 carries.
Ilion turned the ball over five times while Herkimer twice gave the ball away while on the verge of scoring. Brandon Harrigan intercepted a pass on the goal line in the second quarter and Bob Paddock recovered a Herkimer fumble at Ilion’s 2-yard line.
Harrigan’s interception set the stage for the lone Ilion touchdown. A touchback was called when he was tackled by Adrian Viscomi and Travis Mead ran 67 yards for the Golden Bombers on the first play after the change of possession. Three plays later Mead scored on a six-yard run and Tyler Brown ran in the conversion to give Ilion an 8-6 lead.
The Magicians bottled up Ilion’s full-house running game for most of the night. Mead’s 63-yard run was the Golden Bombers’ only run longer than nine yards before halftime.
“It’s difficult to work against,” Steele said of the option attack. “It’s difficult to stop and difficult to pick up. There are bodies all over the place. Coach (Jason) Izzo did a great job preparing us for their offense during the week”
Page 2 of 2 - Mead also had a 23-yard gain in the second half and finished with 104 yards on seven carries.
Herkimer is now 2-0 overall and in league play while Ilion is 0-2 both in the league and overall. The Magicians are on the road Friday for their next game against Frankfort-Schuyler while Ilion heads to Mohawk for a non-league game Friday.
