  • The 144th season at Saratoga Race Course has ended with attendance up by more than 3 percent and total wagering increasing by nearly 6 percent over last year.
The New York Racing Association says more than 20,000 fans attended Monday’s finale of the 2012 Saratoga season, pushing overall attendance to a little over 901,000 for the 40-day meet. That’s an increase of 3.4 percent over 2011’s total attendance. One day of racing was lost last year because of Tropical Storm Irene.
Total on-track handle was nearly $128.3 million, an increase of 5.9 percent from last year. The total handle from all wagering sources, including simulcast locations nationwide, increased by nearly 12 percent to more than $588 million.
In 2013, Saratoga will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its first thoroughbred racing season.
