ALFRED STATE INVITATIONAL
The Herkimer County Community College Generals won one of three matches Saturday as their season got under way at the Alfred State Invitational.
The Generals were beaten in pool play Butler County Community College and Alfred State but won their matchup against Baltimore City Community College.
Alfred State was unbeaten in pool play and earned the top seed for the championship playoff but was beaten 25-17, 25-23 in the final by Butler.
Butler defeated Herkimer 25-23, 25-10 to start the day. Raylin Stephens had eight digs for the Generals; Kayla Barber had seven digs, two kills, two blocks and two assists; and Brynn Hlozansky had seven digs, three kills, two blocks and an assist.
Herkimer bounced back and beat Baltimore 25-14, 25-10. Barber led the attack with 10 kills, three blocks and six digs; Hlozansky added four kills and six digs; Cristen Davis had 14 assists, two kills, an ace and a dig; and Mary Lenhart had three kills, an assist and a dig.
The Generals ended their day by dropping two games to Alfred State by scores of 25-17 and 25-19. Herkimer was first to 18 in the second game before the Pioneers ran off five points in a row. Hlozanksy had a block for Herkimer’s 19th point before losing the set to an errant pass and an unforced hitting error. Barber had four blocks, three kills and eight digs; Hlozanksy had two blocks, an assist and two digs; Davis had seven assists, two digs and an ace; and Emily Martin added three digs and an ace.
Herkimer plays at home for the first time this season against Columbia-Greene Community College Wednesday at 6 p.m.
