  • A  55-year-old man was killed when unsafe speed caused him to lose control of his motorcycle in the town of Frankfort Sunday evening, Frankfort town police said.
Jerry L. Jones, of Utica, was riding west on Route 5S with two other friends on motorcycles when his bike went off the roadway and struck a road marker along the south shoulder of the roadway, about one mile west of the German Flatts town line, Officer in Charge James Getman Jr. said Monday.
The bike traveled into the grassy median, where Jones was then thrown from the motorcycle, Getman said.
Frankfort Ambulance responded to the scene and took Jones to St. Elizabeth Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead, Getman said.
Both east and westbound lanes of Route 5S were closed from German Flatts to the Frankfort exit for about four hours Sunday evening while police reconstructed the accident scene, Getman said. Unsafe speed was determined to be a contributing factor in the accident, he said.
Frankfort town police were assisted by Ilion and Frankfort village police.
