Pitching dominated yet another District V American Legion game at Veterans memorial Park Thursday when Parkhurst Post 1448 defeated Little Falls Post 31 3-2 with an unearned run in the top of the seventh inning.
Starters Pat McGrath for Parkhurst Post and Lucas Godlewski for Little Falls Post both pitched complete game three-hitters and combined to strike out 29 batters. McGrath fanned 16 — matching Clonan-Wicks-Staley Post 1000’s Aaron LoPiccolo’s total against Little Falls Post Saturday — and did not allow a hit over the final 5 2/3 innings.
The game was tied at the start of the seventh inning when Dan Buehler led off with a single to right field, his second hit for Parkhurst Post. Steve Chruscicki was called on to pinch run and moved to second base on Nick Carzo’s bunt. Godlewski struck Cody Murphy out on a pitch in the dirt. Chruscicki had a big jump and took off for third base on the play. Catcher Kevin Chrisman’s throw to first base hit Murphy and Chruscicki scored as the ball rolled into right field.
McGrath closed the game by striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh inning. He fanned the final seven batters he faced and retired 17 in a row to end the game. McGrath struck out the side four times.
Parkhurst Post missed a chance to break to the tie in the fifth inning. Two walks and a wild pitch put runners at second and third with nobody out. Murphy tagged up on Zach Ciotti’s fly ball to center field and was thrown out at the plate by Little Falls Post’s Dylan Pechtel.
Little Falls Post scored single runs in the first and second innings and could have had more. McGrath walked Pechtel to start the first inning. Josh Keeler followed a single to center field and the ball was misplayed in the outfield as Pechtel circled the bases and scored. McGrath walked two of the next three batters to load the bases but got out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts.
Corey Fierro’s blooper dropped in for a hit behind the mound in the bottom of the second inning. Fierro went from first base to third on a hit by Pechtel and scored on an overthrow when Pechtel stole second base. Pechtel went to third when Keeler flew out and was stranded there as the final base-runner for Little Falls Post.
Buehler doubled with two outs in the top of the first inning and scored on a Matt Moore single. Parkhurst Post tied the game with a run in the third without recording a hit.
Godlewski struck out 13 batters and walked four. He has 26 strikeouts in 12 innings and has allowed eight hits in losses to Adrean Post 625 and Parkhurst Post.
