Four Glens Falls pitchers silenced the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs’ bats Wednesday as the Golden Eagles notched the first shutout of the Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League season with a 3-0 victory at Veterans Memorial Park.
The Golden Eagles scored in the top of the first inning against John Means and held a 1-0 lead until they tacked on two runs in the ninth. Danny Brennan led off the game with a double and scored when Ross Kivett, the second batter, tripled.
Means fanned the next three Glens Falls batters and held the Golden Eagles in check for the rest of the first seven innings. The left-hander from Fort Scott Community College in Kansas allowed just one more hit and struck out 10 batters while walking three.
Glens Falls starter Brandon Magallones allowed only a first-inning double by Chris Cruz in his three innings. Luke Dauch allowed two hits over four innings then Ryan Peterson and Jared Cheek each pitched an inning and allowed one hit. Cheek earned his second save to go with one win in three relief appearances.
The Golden Eagles loaded the bases in the ninth inning against Taylor Wright and  scored on a two-out error and a single by Kivett. Hassan Evans threw J.P. Rousseau out at home plate from center field to end the inning.
The DiamondDawgs had four runners of their own thrown outon the bases. Magallones picked David Del Grande off after hitting him with a pitch in the third inning. Rousseau threw out Luke Nethaway trying to steal third base in the fifth and Mark Stuckey trying to steal second in the sixth. Rousseau also started and finished a double play to end the eighth inning. Joe Carcone had led off with a pinch-hit single and advanced to third base with Jonatahn Scott batting. Scott struck out on a pitch in the dirt. After checking on Carcone, Rousseau threw to first base for the second out. Rousseau had drifted away from home plate to make his throw and with Peterson still stationed at the foot of the mound, Carcone made a late break for home. Rousseau retreated to take the return throw from Mike Vigliarolo and made a sweeping tag of Carcone to complete the double play.
Cruz and Kivett each had two of his team’s five hits. Nethaway’s double was the first Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League hit for the Herkimer County Community College catcher.
