  • The Little Falls Family Dollar will be closing its doors.
An exact date of when the closing will occur, or reasons as to why the discount store will cease to serve as one of the anchor stores at Shoppers Square, are not known, as requests for information from the company’s Charlotte, N.C.-based press office have not been returned.
Little Falls Mayor Robert Peters said he was notified of the impending closure last week.
“I first heard about their decision to close a week ago, and I am still in shock over it,” he said Tuesday. “I do not know why the company is choosing to pull out of Little Falls, but I do know their decision is not connected with any development that may or may not occur in the future.”
Peters said it is difficult when a commercial entity closes.
“It’s a loss of jobs and revenue,” he said. “Closings like this impact everyone, from the employees to the taxpayers. It’s always difficult for communities, especially communities of our size, to lose companies, but it is part of the economic times that we are in. That is why we must continue to focus our attention on bringing in new development. We need the jobs and revenue that it would bring.”
The mayor said he and the city would work to find a new store to fill looming vacancy at Shoppers Square.
“We will do our part to help promote the city of Little Falls as a place to bring your business to,” he said. “I believe another store could be successful in that location, and I also believe that our residents would support it as they continue to support our other merchants.”
In discussing the types of stores he would like to see locate to the city, Peters said he believed a clothing store would prove to be successful.
“There is a need for a clothing store in our community,” he said. “A store like that could thrive in Little Falls. But we can not focus our attention on attracting one type of store to our city, because if we did we could miss out on finding others that could fill other needs. “
Family Dollar is considered to be one of the fastest-growing discount retail chains in the United States. The chain’s stores offer a core assortment of name-brand and quality consumable merchandise supplemented by fashion and seasonal merchandise at low prices. Beginning with one store in 1959 in Charlotte, N.C., the company currently operates more than 6,700 stores in 44 states.
Family Dollar is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its founding this year.
