  • A fire that destroyed a house and barn in Herkimer County on Wednesday night was intentionally set by the owner as part of a suicide, state police said.
Trooper Jack Keller said a man living at a residence on Grant Road, near the intersection with Military Road, in the town of Russia, set the buildings on fire and then drove his car into a front loader nearby, resulting in his death. The man’s name has not been released.
The actions reportedly stemmed from a domestic dispute earlier in the evening, but no one else was injured, police said. Troopers said the man had an argument with his wife.
Numerous fire departments responded to the blaze, which was first reported at about 11 p.m. Wednesday. Crews remained on the scene well into Thursday morning, but had left by 6 a.m.
Responding departments included Poland, Deerfield, Barneveld, Prospect, Remsen, Frankfort Center, Newport, Schuyler, East Herkimer and Dolgeville.
