CENTRAL NEW YORK TOURNAMENT
Dolgeville eighth-graders Ben Nastovski and Triston Engle were among the individual champions crowned Saturday at the 21-team Central New York Tournament at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.
The Blue Devils put four wrestlers in the semifinals and rode the two champions to a ninth-place finish in the team scoring. Section IV Chenango Valley took the team title with 187 points to runner-up Adirondack’s 162 1/2. Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton, Holland Patent and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill rounded out the top five with Ilion and undefeated 189-pound champion Jon Treen in sixth.
Nastovski won his title at 96 pounds while Engle won his second tournament of the season at 112.
Nastovski pinned two of his three opponents, including Chenango Valley’s Billy Liberati at 2:54 of his championship bout. His championship path included a second-period pin of Herkimer’s Ryan Zawtocki and a 9-2 decision against Tory King of New Hartford.
Engle dominated the 112-pound division and ran his unbeaten streak to 23 matches. He pinned three of his four opponents Saturday and scored a major decision, winning 13-1, in his other match. He pinned Blake Haddad of New Hartford with nine seconds left in the second period of the championship bout. He had earlier pinned Ilion’s Chris Welch and Holland Patent’s Israel Rivera in the first period and won his decision against Rob DiDomenica of New Hartford.
Daniel Haughton and Kaleb Smith were Dolgeville’s other semifinalists. Haughton was pinned late in the third period of his semifinal match against Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton’s Dan Gormley, the eventual 125-pound champion. A 3-2 loss to Holland Patent’s Matthew Herringshaw bounced Haughton to the fifth-place bout where he was pinned by Windsor’s Colton Perry and finished fifth.
Herringshaw, a transfer from Little Falls who was previously beaten by Haughton in the finals at a tournament in Saranac, placed fourth Saturday with a 3-1 loss to Whitesboro’s Mike Sardo in the third-place match.
Smith suffered a 6-4 loss to Nathan Walts of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill in his 145-pound semifinal. He bounced back to beat Leland Slawson of Unatego and earn a spot in the third-place match where he pinned Holland Patent’s Tyler Mytych early in the third round.
Treen ran his record to 28-0 on the season with four wins Saturday. He advanced to the championship bout with two pins and a technical fall then finished the day with an 11-3 major decision against Adirondack Wildcat Devin Riegler. Only one of his earlier matches lasted to the third period and that ended with a pin of Camden’s Casler at 4:04.
Ilion135-pounder Keith Hacker joined Treen in the championship round and wound up second with a 6-5 loss to Dustin Greene of Chenango Valley. He had won a 6-3 semifinal decision against Adirondack’s Kevin O’Rourke, scored a technical fall against Unatego’s Kevin Thayer and pinned Alex Gilbert of Vernon-Verona-Sherrill in 19 seconds.
Page 2 of 3 - Zach Smith and James Alsheimer gave Ilion four semifinalists. Smith came back to pin Cody Santiago and take third place at 215 pounds. Alsheimer lost a 2-1 decision to Chenango Valley’s Russell Andrus in the 285-pound final.
Other area semifinalists included Jeremiah Casler and Ricki Clemons of Little Falls and Kyle LaBarge of Mohawk. Clemons and Casler finshed fourth at 119 and 160 pounds, respectively, and LaBarge was sixth at 140.
Five other wrestlers from the area had sixth-place finishes — Herkimer’s Zawtocki at 96 pounds; Mohawk’s John Mazza and Travis Herringshaw at 130 and 171; Ilion’s Cassey Seaton at 152; and Mt. Markham’s Mackenzie Dorre at 215.
