A Herkimer County man faces mandatory 20 years in prison and possibly life in prison after what prosecutors called a “massive” marijuana operation.
Cory Leitz, 41, of Frankfort, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court on Monday to knowingly manufacturing over 1,000 marijuana plants.
According to Richard Hartunian, United States Attorney for the Northern District of New York, Leitz admitted that from August to December 2011, he knowingly grew the plant in a barn on McIntyre Road. During the entire operation Leitz had successfully grown 3,200 marijuana plants and then sold the marijuana to numerous customers in Herkimer County and elsewhere.
Leitz had a prior felony drug conviction in 1998 in Herkimer County.
At the Jan. 29, 2013, sentencing Leitz faces a mandatory 20 years imprisonment with a potential maximum of life imprisonment. After his incarceration Mr. Leitz would be subject to a minimum 10 years of supervised release up to life and a fine of up to $20,000,000.
The prosecution resulted from a joint investigation undertaken by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the New York State Police and the New York National Guard Counterdrug Task Force.
