Family, friends and elected officials came out to celebrate the 50th anniversary of J. Grippe Industrial Supply during a ceremony Friday morning.

A recurring theme in the ceremony was the company’s foundation in its family roots.

“Family is key here and that’s why they’re still around,” said Herkimer County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director John Scarano during the event held in front of its 4160 Acme Road location.

Jody Grippe, president, said he’s been involved with the family business for 43 years, which was founded by his parents the late Joseph and Mary Alice Grippe. He said it was through the sacrifices of his parents that made the business a reality, and that its success is based on the values that they instilled in their children.

“A family business is quite unique,” he said.
Herkimer County Legislature Chairman Vincent Bono said there was no secret to the business’s success.

“Preparation, determination, hard work and the support of a loving family,” said Bono, who also praised the Grippe’s community support.

“It’s an American success story and it’s something to celebrate,” said state Sen. James Seward, R/I/C of Oneonta. “They did it the old-fashioned way. They paid attention to quality, customer service and price.”

Seward also said that when it comes to economic development in New York State, there are the big lures like the former Union Tools site across the street from the business.

“Another important part of economic development is like J. Grippe Industrial Supply,” he said.

J. Grippe Industrial Supply Co., Inc. started in the basement of Joseph and Mary Alice Grippe’s home and now has a vast customer base that includes automotive manufacturing, gun manufacturing, machine shops of all sizes, aircraft manufacturing and educational institutions.
