Stampin’ Up! demonstrator Jacalyn Grooves told children the story of the Tooth Witch on Wednesday as part of the “Dream Big! Read” summer reading program at Frank J. Basloe Library
The story, by Nurit Karlin, tells the tale of the Tooth Witch and how Abra Cadabra, an apprentice assigned to the witch, is magically transformed into the tooth fairy.
Grooves not only told the story, but she dressed as the title character and embellished the story.
Grooves said by dressing the part she could better entertain the children. “Dressing up like the Tooth Witch in the story really helps to reinforce the children’s imagination,” she said.
As part of the program children were encouraged to make crafts related to the story. Children could decorate and make their own lost tooth box, as well as a candy bookmark.
The Dream Big! Read program is a statewide program in which libraries promote reading and feature special programs. Basloe Children’s Librarian Nancy Stowell said the program is going well.
“For today’s event we had a really good turnout,” she said. “In the past, we didn’t seem to have as many children in attendance for programs, but this year is very different.”
The children who signed up for the program at Basloe Library will try to read as many books as they can before the program ends. Stowell said for every book they read a child earns a bead and a star. Once the program is completed, the children will make a lanyard from the beads they earned. The  five children who read the most books will be recognized as the library’s Dream Big! Read top readers.
The next special program will feature magical art performer Leon Etienne on July 26 at 1 p.m.
