A home nurse’s aide has been charged with allegedly stealing several thousand dollars from an elderly man he was caring for in the town of West Winfield, state police said.
Randy Lohnas, 49, of Clinton, was charged March 28 with fourth-degree grand larceny, a felony, and issued a ticket to appear in Winfield Town Court, police said.
Lohnas had been hired privately through an acquaintance as a home nurse’s aide starting in February, and would care for the woman’s 88-year-old father several times a week.
By mid-March, however, Lohnas was told his services were no longer needed once the family noticed money was missing.
The family initially reported $2,600 had been stolen, but the family has since alerted police the total was about $4,100.
Lohnas also allegedly stole a watch, a diamond bracelet and an antique dish, the family said.
Although Lohnas was hired privately, state police said it was unclear whether Lohnas was otherwise working for any homecare or nursing agency.
Lohnas later admitted to the victim’s family and investigators he took the money, but he has denied stealing from anyone else, police said.
“We asked him if there were any other victims, and he said no,” said state police Investigator Frank Spatto in Herkimer. “We haven’t had any other victims coming forward and telling us anything similar.”
