Members of the Mohawk Fire Department extinguished a brush fire in about 30 minutes around 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
Fire Chief Randy Hunt said people were burning garbage off of State Route 168 when some of the grass caught fire, followed by some trees and stumps.
“It was not very big,” Hunt said of the fire.
East Herkimer firefighters were called in for mutual aid.
Hunt said there is a town ordinance against open burns.
“It’s pretty dry out there. It’s easy to start a fire,” he said.
Hunt said the town codes enforcer was also at the scene and tickets were pending.
