Nathan Galinsky Apartments was the site for an open house to benefit the American Heart Association on Tuesday morning.
The event featured a bake sale, Chinese auction and a 50/50 raffle put together by residents to help support this year’s Heart Run and Walk, scheduled to take place on March 3 in Utica.
Property manager Sherry Wellington said the open house has been a tradition with the residents for several years. “The residents really enjoy baking and making baskets for the auction,” she said.
Last year the event raised $700 and this year Wellington said the residents aimed to raise more.
First year resident Katy Wilson said she made brownies for the bake sale and two baskets for the Chinese auction. “I’ve lived in Newport my entire life and I am really enjoying my first open house. It’s nice knowing the event benefits a good cause,” she said.
Wilson said if she won one of the baskets at the open house she would donate it to her family friends, the Synikowski family of Newport, who recently lost their home to a fire.
Heart Run and Walk Association representative Ed View said he has been working with Galinsky Apartments for eight years and every year the open house raises close to $1,000 for the cause.
“The residents really want to help the cause and it’s really impressive to see what they have made for the Heart Run and Walk open house event,” he said.
All proceeds made from the open house event will be donated to the American Heart Association.
