The life skills class at Fort Plain Junior - Senior High School recently won a $2,000 “Garden for Life” grant from Lowe’s.
Through the classroom program, life skills teacher Lisa Petty will use gardening to teach life skills in a class for special education students. An existing garden will be renovated and students will grow plants and beautify school grounds.
Petty helped write the grant and said the class plans to buy tools, a storage shed, gloves, soil, seeds and other supplies.
In the grant, she said students will raise seedlings in a greenhouse at the school and plant them in the garden in the spring. They will also learn how to properly store these tools in their own shed near the school greenhouse. Students will plant a vegetable garden with plants grown from seeds they have started. They will also raise plants that can be used for landscaping at the school district buildings and will also have a plant sale of with any leftover seedlings.
“We’re going to have a bench out there too and fencing. And we’re going to use the greenhouse the district already has,” she said. “This is a good way to teach students hands-on activities and give them skills they can use throughout their lives. It helps them to learn by doing.”
