Ilion, N.Y. —
Nobody is really sure where the name Doo Dah came from, but Herkimer resident Pat Ralbovsky said the parade is “just crazy.”
Thousands of residents, many from beyond Ilion, lined the streets in the heart of the village Friday for the annual Ilion Days Doo Dah Parade.
Part of a week-long series of events, the parade featured clowns of motor bikes, floats and of course, lots of candy.
“The kids love the candy,” Little Falls resident Staci Gross said. “It’s our favorite parade because it’s the nicest and the biggest around here.”
Several of the trucks and floats that drove by became candy dispensers, children eagerly scooping up what they could.
Gross and her children, ranging in ages 6 to 9, were gathered at the corner of Central Avenue and East Clark Street for the parade.
“We come every year,” she said.
Ralbovsky said she comes every year as well, and used to bring her grandchildren.
Situated across the street from Gross and her children, Ralbovsky added that they sometimes grab a bite to eat and sit on the curb to watch the parade.
“It’s a big parade and it’s funny,” she said. “It’s just a grand time for everybody.”
Ilion Days events continues Satuday with a 5K race, craft fair and mutt dog show. Sunday there is a classic car show.
