Free round-trip bus rides will be provided to residents of the Oppenheim-Ephratah Central School District who need transportation to vote in St. Johnsville on Tuesday.
The buses will pick up residents at the Oppenheim, Hilltop and two Rockwood-Garoga-Lassellsville fire stations and drive them to the polls at D.H. Robbins Elementary School where they will be able to vote on the Oppenheim-Ephratah-St. Johnsville Board of Education referendum.
Residents must call the school district office at 518-568-2014, ext. 104, to arrange a pick-up.
The buses will depart at 2 and 4:30 p.m.
Tuesday’s referendum will ask voters to decide how many members should serve on the new board of education — five, seven or nine — and how long the members should serve per term — three, four or five years. On Tuesday, March 19, voters will elect members from a list of board candidates.
Because this is a state Department of Education referendum, state Commissioner of Education John King, Jr. established St. Johnsville as the single polling location for both referendums.
Oppenheim-Ephratah and St. Johnsville district officials had requested an additional polling site be established at Oppenheim-Ephratah Central School, but the request was denied.
Once the merged school district is established on July 1, the new board of education will be responsible for setting the number of polling sites and their locations.
The polls for Tuesday’s referendum will be open from noon to 8 p.m.
Since the last meeting between the boards of education of the Oppenheim-Ephratah and St. Johnsville school districts, officials confirmed the terms of the new board of education members will be staggered. Residents had previously expressed concern about the number of years for each term.
Oppenheim-Ephratah Superintendent of Schools Dan Russom has said while he is not sure as to how the terms will be staggered initially, he believes the candidates elected with the most votes will serve the longest terms and those elected with the fewest votes will serve the shortest terms.
Russom has also said he is not sure what length of term will be voted in on Tuesday, but has heard people want the new board of education to be made up of seven members rather than five or nine.
Absentee ballots for Tuesday’s referendum are still available.
To obtain an absentee ballot, Oppenheim-Ephratah residents should contact District Clerk Anna O’Connell at 518-568-2014, ext. 104. O-E residents may also pick up absentee ballots at the district office today from 4 to 7 p.m. St. Johnsville Central School District residents who require an absentee ballot should contact District Clerk Elizabeth Battisti at 518-568-2622. Completed applications and ballots must be received by the district clerks no later than 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Petitions for residents interested in running for the board of education will be available beginning Feb. 6. To obtain a petition, residents should contact the district clerks.
Completed petitions must be returned no later than Feb. 25.
