LITTLE FALLS POST 3, HERKIMER POST 2

HERKIMER, N.Y. — An error gave Herkimer Post 38 the lead in the second inning Monday but another error gave Little Falls Post 31 a 3-2 win at Harmon Field.

Herkimer Post was one out away from walking off the field with a 2-1 win at home when a wild throw with the bases loaded allowed two runs to score and gave Little Falls Post the lead in the top of the seventh inning.

Kevin Chrisman sent Herkimer Post’s Matt Moore crashing into the left field fence to make a spectacular catch leading off the inning. Evan Davis started the winning rally with a single to left-center and pinch-hitter Kyle Ortlieb-Lyon singled through the left side of the Herkimer Post infield to put the go-ahead run on base. Paul Barnes grounded into a force play at second base then moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Sean Tripp walked Ryan Dawley to load the bases with two outs then induced a routine ground ball from Dylan Blumberg. The grounder was fielded cleanly but a high throw sailed over the head of first baseman Steve Hartmann, allowing Davis and Barnes to score the second and third runs of the evening for Little Falls Post.

A strikeout ended the inning and left the home team with three outs to climb back into the game.

Dan Wiecek retired Justin Roorda on a swinging bunt to start the bottom of the eighth then struck Mark Mula out. Down to its final out, Herkimer Post got a single from Mike Bass to put the tying run on base and extend the game. Wiecek had not allowed a hit after the second inning before Bass singled.

Wiecek shook off the hit and retired Moore on a ground ball to shortstop to end the game.

Tripp held Little Falls Post hitless into the sixth inning and finished with a three-hitter in the loss. Dawley singled with one out and Tripp walked Blumberg and Patrick Shepardson back-to-back to load the bases before escaping the jam with a force play at the plate and a strikeout.

Dawley reached base on a fielder’s choice in the first inning and scored on a two-out error to give Little Falls Post a 1-0 lead.

Armand Viscomi and Ryan Schiavi singled back to back with two outs in the second for Herkimer Post then scored on an error on a ball hit by Justin Roorda.

Herkimer Post was unable to add to its lead despite leaving five runners on base in the first three innings.

Wiecek struck out 12 batters and allowed five hits.

Roorda contributed a spectacular defensive play to end the fourth inning. With one out and a runner at first base, the Herkimer Post center fielder ran down Andrew Gorinshek’s deep fly ball in the gap in left-center. Shepardson, who was running on the play, had rounded second base and was headed for third. As Shepardson hastily retreated, Roorda threw back across the field to double him off at first and end the inning.

The win moves Little Falls Post (5-9, 3-2 Herkimer County) back within half a game of Ilion Post 920 in the county standings with a trip to Ilion scheduled for Tuesday. Herkimer Post (2-10, 1-4 Herkimer County) takes on Ilion Post Wednesday.
