MOHAWK VALLEY CC 57, HERKIMER COUNTY CC 40

The Herkimer County Community College Generals got off to a slow offensive start against third-ranked Mohawk Valley Community College Tuesday and were beaten 57-40 by the Hawks.

The Generals (15-5) scored only five points in the game’s first 10 1/2 minutes and 12 in the first half.

Their offensive struggles masked a solid defensive effort by the Generals who limited Mohawk Valley (18-2) to its third-lowest point total of the season. The Hawks had a nine-minute stretch during the first half when their only points came off three offensive rebounds. The bigger and stronger Hawks had a decisive edge on the boards throughout the game and outrebounded Herkimer 50-16.

Trailing 14-5 in the middle of the first half, the Generals got as close as six points only once. They were within eight at 20-12 before Shaniece Brown ended the first half with a layup and a three-pointer for Mohawk Valley.

Shileeka Williams pulled Herkimer within eight points for the last time with a three-pointer 3 1/2 minutes into the second half. Trailing 28-20, the Generals forced a turnover on Mohawk Valley’s next possession but the Hawks’ Victoria Thomas stole the ball back near midcourt and played it ahead to Cyntara Way whose three-pointer pushed the margin back into double digits to stay.

Way’s shot started an 8-0 Mohawk Valley run and the Hawks eventually led by as many as 18 points.

Karrin Walker led Mohawk Valley with 11 points. Brown added nine points and eight rebounds and Thomas had 12 rebounds.

Samantha Randio led Herkimer with 14 points while Whitney Brown scored 12.

Herkimer takes on another top 10 opponent at home Thursday when the Generals tip off at 6 p.m. against No. 8 Onondaga Community College.
