MEN: Herkimer County Community College 61, Fulton-Montgomery Community College 53

JOHNSTOWN, N.Y. — The Herkimer County Community College Generals trailed at halftime Tuesday but recovered to defeat Fulton-Montgomery Community College 61-53 on the road.

Fulton-Montgomery had led by as many as six points in the first half before Herkimer made a late run and tied the score at 24 on a layup by Cliff Brown. Taron Pascal beat the buzzer with a three-point shot from the left elbow and the Raiders took a three-point lead with them to the locker room at halftime.

Akeem Ellis and Brown led the offensive charge for the Generals (20-2) with 15 points each. Rhamel Williams had 12 points, 10 rebounds and five steals and Ian Austin-Michaud had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Dan Schulz scored 12 points for Fulton-Montgomery (9-14) which lost its fifth consecutive game.

Third-ranked Herkimer plays in Syracuse Thursday at Onondaga Community College.

WOMEN: Mohawk Valley Community College 63, Herkimer County Community College 56

HERKIMER, N.Y. — The Hawks from Mohawk Valley Community College fell behind early Tuesday but found enough offense to squeeze out a 63-56 win at Herkimer County Community College.

Mohawk Valley (17-1) found itself down 10-0 within the first four minutes of play before Hamilton High School graduate Liz Unger hit the first of her four three-point shots. Unger’s shot started a 7-0 run  for the Hawks.

Herkimer (14-7) stretched its lead back to six points but the visitors closed the margin to two before halftime after briefly pulling even at 26.

The Hawks led 54-53 with four minutes left in the game and closed with a 9-3 run.

Jessica Brawn and Kim Vrigian. Jessica Brawn scored 10 points Herkimer and Kim Vrigian had 14 with 12 coming in the second half. Cooperstown’s Samantha Fox scored eight points and Little Falls’ Courtney Terzi had six.

Domonique Washington scored 19 points for Mohawk Valley. Unger added 12, Keonti Powell scored 14 and West Canada Valley High School graduate Desiree Fauvelle tossed in five.

Herkimer’s next game is Thursday at Onondaga Community College. Mohawk Valley takes on the Albany College of Pharmacy at home Thursday.
