OPPENHEIM-EPHRATAH 52, WATERVILLE 50, overtime

OPPENHEIM, N.Y. — Matt Rubas blocked a shot as the final buzzer sounded Saturday to seal Oppenheim-Ephratah’s 52-50 overtime win over the Waterville Indians.

Neither team led by more than seven points in regulation and the game went to overtime tied at 46. With the teams still tied at 50, the Hawks (6-2) took the lead for a good on a basket by Terry Randall. Mo Conte’s initial shot was blocked into the hands of Randall. Randall missed once but rebounded the ball and put it back for the go-ahead basket with 15 seconds on the clock.

Waterville pushed the ball into the corner at the far end of the court and Rubas blocked R.J. Baumgarten’s three-point try as time ran out.

Randall led the Hawks with 14 points. Mo Conte added 11 points and six assists and Say Jenkins had nine points and eight rebounds. Keagan Brown scored nine points including the first four for Oppenheim-Ephratah in overtime.

Waterville (4-5) got 14 points from Viktor Selyuzhitskiy and 13 from Robert Hughes.

The Hawks take on Rome Catholic Friday at 5 p.m. at Herkimer County Community College.

ROME CATHOLIC 73, POLAND 50

NEW YORK MILLS, N.Y. — Rome Catholic got 54 points from Jerry Howard and Zach Rowlands Saturday and defeated Poland’s Tornadoes 73-50 in the consolation game of New York Mills’ Ed Wadas Tournament for its first win of the season.

The Redwings (1-5) led 26-24 at halftime and pulled away after the break. Howard finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds and four assists while Rowlands added 24 points. Varsity newcomer Josh Blair who moved up from junior  varsity  for the tournament had seven points and 15 rebounds.

Mike Hennings scored 16 points to lead the Tornadoes. Harrison Rosenburgh added 10.

Hennings and Howard were selected for the tournament’s all-star team.

NEW YORK MILLS, N.Y. — New York Mills claimed the championship at its annual Ed Wadas Tournament with a 63-39 win over the Oriskany Redskins Saturday.

Richfield Springs transfer Fred Russ had 16 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Marauders (5-2) and earn a spot on the all-tournament team. Most valuable player Matt Dziekan scored nine points, Edgardo Colon had 10 and Brandon McNair, New York Mills’ other recent transfer, scored eight. Jeff Albright chipped in with seven points and 10 rebounds.

Mike Gaglianese, a tournament all-star, led the Redskins (5-4) with 14 points. Travis Basciotta also represented Oriskany on the all-star team.

NORTHVILLE 50, ST. JOHNSVILLE 33

ST. JOHNSVILLE, N.Y. — The Northville Falcons limited St. Johnsville to eight total points in the second and third quarters Friday and defeated the Saints 50-33 in a rematch of Section II’s Class D title game from last season.

Jordan Williams scored 19 points and Mackenzie Groff added 15 for Northville (5-4, 2-2 WAC North) as the defending sectional champs won their third consecutive game to move over the .500 mark.

The Falcons opened the game with a spurt that produced a 7-1 lead before St. Johnsville’s Jaxson Smith took over. Smith hit three three-pointers and scored 12 points in the opening period to put the Saints up 15-12.

St. Johnsville’s offense dried up after that. The Saints were held to a Smith free throw and a Scott Jaikin three-pointer in the second quarter then managed only a pair of baskets in the third while falling behind 32-23.

Back-to-back baskets by Smith had St. Johnsville back within four points at 32-28 with almost seven minutes remaining in the game. The margin remained four until Groff hit a three-pointer from the left elbow with 4:42 left to play. Saint Jared Szczesniak made one of a pair of free throws at the other end before Northville ran of 13 straight points to put the game away.

Smith finished with  17 points to lead St. Johnsville (2-5, 0-3 WAC North).

Northville was a 59-51 junior varsity winner in double overtime.

St. Johnsville plays at home Tuesday against Galway.
