ILION POST 17, HERKIMER POST 5

ILION, N.Y. — Ilion Post 920 took a big step toward locking up the top seed for the Herkimer County playoffs when it defeated Herkimer Post 38 17-5 at Diss Memorial Field Wednesday.

The win assures Ilion Post (10-7-1, 5-1 Herkimer County) of at least a share of first place for the regular season. The first-place team is rewarded with a bye into the best-of-three county championship series and home field for games 1 and 3, if necessary. The teams finishing second and third have a single-game playoff to determine the other entry for the championship series.

Jamie Barr struck out eight Herkimer Post batters Wednesday in a game shortened to five innings by the American Legion 10-run rule. Offensively, Ilion Post pounded out 12 hits and drew 11 walks against three pitchers.

Mike Fahy had three hits, three runs scored and four runs batted in to lead the Ilion Post offense. Bill LeClair added two hits and scored four runs, Dan Giacovelli had two hits and three runs batted in and Myles Malta and Dylan Todd each drove in two runs.

Sean Tripp had two hits and scored a run for Herkimer Post. Mike Bass, the third Herkimer Post pitcher, threw one hitless inning of shutout relief. Bass, Artie Zhushma and Armand Viscomi were pressed into duty on the mound when Kyle Carpenter, Herkimer Post’s scheduled starter, suffered a season-ending knee injury during a pregame workout.

Ilion Post is on the road Thursday for a game against Oneida Post 169, a team they came from behind to beat 19-10 at home last week. Herkimer Post’s next game is Monday at home against Little Falls Post 31.
