Nelliston native Bill Dahlen is one of six former players on the 10-candidate pre-integration era ballot to be reviewed and voted upon at baseball’s winter meetings for consideration for the Hall of Fame Class of 2013, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum announced Thursday.
The ballot includes three executives and one umpire. Dahlen was also a finalist four years ago when Joe Gordon was the lone candidate selected for induction. Needing nine votes from the panel of 12 voters, Gordon received 10 and Allie Reynolds was next with eight; Dahlen was one of three candidates to receive less than three votes.
Joining Dahlen on the 2012 ballot are Samuel Breadon, Wes Ferrell, Marty Marion, Tony Mullane, Hank O’Day, Alfred Reach, Jacob Ruppert, Bucky Walters and Deacon White. All candidates will be considered based on the totality of their careers in the game, though Breadon, Reach and Ruppert are included for their contributions as executives, and O’Day as an umpire.
All 10 candidates are deceased. Ferrell, White and Walters were also on the 2008 ballot and received six, five and four votes, respectively. Sixteen voters will cast ballots in Dec. 2 and 3 with 12 votes required to meet the 75 percent standard.
Dahlen, born Jan. 5, 1870, in Nelliston, spent 21 seasons in the majors from 1891-1911, playing almost 90 percent of his games at shortstop, compiling a .272 batting average with 84 home runs and 1,234 RBI. He scored 100 or more runs in each of his first six seasons and recorded 120 hits or more 15 times. He retired in 1911 as the active home run leader with 84 and as the all-time leader in games played (2,444). His 42-game hitting streak in 1894 was also a record at the time of his retirement. Dahlen went 0-for-6 on Aug. 7, 1894, then started a 28-game streak the next day. He died Dec. 5, 1950, in Brooklyn where he is buried.
Candidates remain eligible in perpetuity through the Era Committee process, with new ballots constructed by the Historical Overview Committee the fall prior to each election.
The Nineteenth Century Committee of the Society for American Baseball Research named Dahlen the Overlooked 19th Century Baseball Legend for 2012, an honor bestowed upon a 19th-century player, manager, executive or other baseball personality not yet inducted into the Hall of Fame.
