Former Herkimer County Community College and Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs pitcher Willie Gabay made his professional debut Thursday with an inning of scoreless relief for the Princeton Rays of the Rookie-level Appalachian League.

Gabay pitched the ninth inning of the Rays’ 15-2 victory over Kingsport Mets. He walked the first batter he faced, Kingston third baseman Pedro Perez, but retired the next three Mets on two ground outs and a fly ball.

Gabay signed a contract with the Tampa Bay Rays after being selected in the 15th round of Major League Baseball’s amateur draft earlier this month.
