DOLGEVILLE, N.Y. — Three matches; three fifth games; three wins.
The Dolgeville Blue Devils did it again Wednesday, pulling out another 3-2 victory. The Blue Devils defeated Cooperstown’s Redskins 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22 as their regular season winning streak survived another close call and reached 56 matches.
The Cooperstown match was the closest yet following wins over Adirondack and Frankfort-Schuyler. The teams switched ends in the fifth game with Dolgeville leading 13-12 Wednesday. Cooperstown never took the lead back but the teams were tied as late as 22-all following Katie Horrigan’s 20th and final kill for the Redskins. Blue Devil Colleen Darby blocked Horrigan to break the tie and Marissa Mowers followed with a kill to put Dolgeville at game point. Following a timeout, Darby put down the final kill for the Blue devils to end the match.
“It’s been a case of show me what you’ve got,” said coach Barb Allen whose Blue Devils have had to replace two of Section III’s top players this season following the graduation of Natasha Mamrosh and Juleah Vedder. “That’s some top notch competition we’ve played in those three matches.”
Mowers served 26-for-26 with six aces and had 29 digs and six kills for the Blue Devils (3-0); Cassie Scharpou served 26-for-27 with five aces, nine kills, an assist and 24 digs; Darby had 12 kills, two blocks and two digs; Lora Allen had 18 assists, six aces, two kills and six digs; Chelsie Petras had eight kills, a block and a dig; Carissa Petras had 11 assists, three aces and five digs; Brittany Rice had 10 digs and an ace; Tawny Boyer had eight digs and two aces; Deanna Drumm had two blocks, a kill, an assist and five digs; and Lexy Barretta had five digs, a kill and an assist.
Horrigan had 20 kills, 10 aces and two assists for Cooperstown (1-1); Kim Armstrong had 26 assists, four aces, four kills and four digs; Sarah Dewey had eight kills, an ace and three digs; and Sarah Angerer served four aces.
Dolgeville took the junior varsity match in two games, winning by scores of 25-15 and 25-14. Heather Randall had six aces, a kill and an assist for the Blue Devils; and CharliRose Seeley had five aces and two digs.
The Blue Devils have a match Friday against Sauquoit Valley and will host a six-team tournament Saturday with varsity teams from Little Falls, Old Forge, Morrisville-Eaton, Beekmantown and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill; all but Morrisville-Eaton and Beekmantown will also be sending their junior varsity squads.
OPPENHEIM-EPHRATAH 3, HAMILTON 0
HAMILTON, N.Y. — The Oppenheim-Ephratah Hawks swept three games from Hamilton Wednesday and ran their record to 3-0 with the 25-12, 25-16, 25-11 victory over the Emerald Knights.
Kathleen Damin had 13 kills, a block, an ace and four digs for the Hawks (3-0); Lindsay Ploss had seven kills, a block and five digs; Katherine Lynch had 25 assists, five aces and a dig; and Lisa McMillan had eight digs and an ace.
Tiffany Jones-Maxwell had eight kills, a block, an ace and an assist for Hamilton (1-1); Valaya LaLonde had five assists, an ace and eight digs; Kaitlin Askew had four assists and three digs; and Samantha Martin had three kills, two assists and two digs.
Oppenheim-Ephratah also won the junior varsity match.
The Hawks play on the road again Friday at Little Falls. Oppenheim-Ephratah swept two games from Little Falls Saturday when the teams met in the finals of the Hawks’ annual tournament.
