ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Frankfort-Schuyler senior Hank Penree had quite a weekend in the New York State Division II Wrestling Championships.

Penree was in control throughout the tourney, pinning his way into Sunday night’s championship finals in the 215-pound bracket.

Penree’s first victim was Section I Nanuet’s Bill Smith, decked in 3:27. It took Penree 2:15 to dispense with Section V Canisteo-Greenwood’s Craig Amidon in the quarterfinals and semifinalist Logan Rock of Section II Warrensburg lasted 5:34 with Penree.

Having advanced to the finals for the second straight year, Section V champion Brad Eichelberger of Fredonia was the final obstacle facing Penree in his quest to win Frankfort-Schuyler’s first state championship in 40 years. A takedown in the first period gave Penree a 2-0 lead. Eichelberger opted for the down position to start the second period and tied the score with a reversal with nine seconds on the clock.

The choice was Penree’s for the start of the third period and he, too, picked the bottom. A reversal netted two points and a 4-2 lead which stood until Penree was assessed a penalty point for locking his fingers in the final 30 seconds. Neither grappler would score after the action resumed and Penree won the championship with a 4-3 decision.
Don Marrone won Frankfort-Schuyler’s last state title at 120 pounds in 1968. Mike Spohn (148 pounds) and Joe Ferraro (180) had won championships in 1967 and 1966, respectively.

Penree was one of Section III’s four Division II champions and helped the section to a second-place finish as a team behind Section V. Section III’s other champions were Morrisville-Eaton 160-pounder Ryan LeBlanc and Watertown-Immaculate Heart teammates Antonio Doldo and Derek Brenon at 145 and 152 pounds.

Dolgeville’s Daniel Haughton had the next-best outing at the tournament among area wrestlers. The freshman dropped his first match Saturday, falling to Windsor’s Colton Perry 7-2. Haughton bounced back with a 49-second pin of Onteora’s Pete Hottum and a 7-2 win against Port Jefferson’s Chris Bourguinon.

Two wins in the wrestle-backs moved Haughton on to Sunday’s competition and a match with Whitehall seventh-grader Tyrel White. White got an early takedown, but Haughton countered with an escape and a takedown for a 3-2 lead he kept from the first period until the final whistle.

In the fourth round of wrestle-backs Haughton ran into Peru’s Arik Robinson. The two were tied 2-2 early before Robinson took control, eventually downing Haughton 6-2 and sending the freshman into the fifth-place match against another Section II wrestler. Same section, same result as Haughton took home the fifth-place medal by beating Hudson Falls’ Noah Valastro 3-0.

Haughton, a wild card who placed third in Section III, was Dolgeville’s first entry in the state meet in a decade. Marc Tanner won a sectional championship and placed fourth in the state at 189 pounds in 1998.

Little Falls senior Johnny Wratten and Frankfort-Schuyler senior Andrew Penree weren’t as fortunate as Haughton, falling shy of the medal rounds.

Wratten faced off against Peru’s Bryan Bonville in his opener and entered the third period trailing 8-6. Starting the third on the bottom, Wratten made his escape to close within a point at 8-7, but Bonville was just getting started. The Peru senior threw in a double-leg takedown and turned Wratten for a 12-7 lead. Bonville did give up one more point, but Bonville added two more back points for a 14-8 win.

Wratten won his first-round wrestle-back, easily topping Gouverneur senior Dale Cronk 12-1. Wratten wound up falling short of a medal, however, falling to Bainbridge-Guilford-Afton’s Kris Stafford, 6-4.

Penree, Hank’s brother, followed suit with Haughton and Wratten, falling in the first round when Medina’s Richard Dawson took an 8-3 decision. He followed that by winning his first two wrestle-backs. Penree pinned John Lauro of McGann Mercy at 3:32 then pinned Ellenville’s Eric Thayer in 2:58. In the end, though, Penree fell one win shy of a medal, losing to Locust Valley’s Rob Piscitello, 6-3.

In Division I competition at Blue Cross Arena, Amsterdam’s Brian Benton, the son of St. Johnsville High School teacher and soccer coach Zale Benton, took second place at 130 pounds. The senior pinned Newburgh’s Kyle Piaquadio in the first round then won decisions against Max Cohen of Williamsville East and Mike Doria of Massapequa before Fordham Prep’s Andrew Lenzi took the title with a 5-3 decision in the finals.
