WEST CANADA VALLEY 59, FRANKFORT-SCHUYLER 38
What had been a close game for a half quickly turned into a rout Tuesday as the West Canada Valley Indians defeated Frankfort-Schuyler 59-38 in a foul-plagued Center State Conference Division II contest.
“We were better in the second half,” West Canada Valley’s Steve Porter said following his 402nd varsity coaching victory. “We didn’t press in the first half. We came out with full court pressure in the second half and picked up the tempo. We got some good looks and Jordan Yaworski knocked down some shots.”
Frankfort-Schuyler (4-10, 3-5 CSC-II) held a 23-22 lead at halftime on the road and trailed by only one point before West Canada Valley began to pull away three minutes into the third quarter. Yaworski, who had half of his team’s points in the first half, delivered one of his five three-point baskets to start a 12-1 run by the Indians (6-7, 4-5 CSC-II). Josh Sternberg set up a layup by his brother Mike then converted a steal into a basket of his own and prompted Frankfort-Schuyler coach Mark Spina to call a timeout with his team trailing by seven points. An offensive foul cost the Maroon Knights possession of the ball following the timeout and West Canada Valley came up empty on its next possession. Indian Jack Minasi was called for a foul after diving in an attempt to steal the ball and having a Frankfort-Schuyler player trip over him on the floor.
Still displeased to have been called for an offensive foul a short time before, Frankfort-Schuyler’s Anthony Sparagna continued to plead his case and drew a technical foul while play was stopped for Minasi’s foul. Spina’s protest drew a second technical and Yaworski hit three of the four free throws to give West Canada Valley a double digit lead for the first time. Minasi was fouled on the ensuing possession and added two more free throws for a 39-27 West Canada Valley lead.
The fouls continued to pile up. West Canada Valley was in the double bonus by the time the third quarter was over and a total of 18 fouls had been called. The teams would shoot 44 foul shots in the second half and three players would foul out in the final period.
Leading 42-31 after three quarter, West Canada Valley would score eight of the first 10 points in the final period to open the final period. The margin eventually reached 22 points.
