HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL -

ILION 4, LITTLE FALLS 3, eight innings

ILION, N.Y. — The Ilion Golden Bombers walked off with a win Wednesday — literally.

Jeff Eysaman drew a free pass on a 3-2 pitch with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to force home the deciding run in the Golden Bombers’ 4-3 victory over the Little Falls Mounties.

The winning rally started with an error. Ryan Risi attempted to advance Dan Crim with a bunt and reached base safely, as well. A passed ball moved the runners into scoring position with nobody out and a walk loaded the bases. Devin Mannuzza retired the next batter on a pop-up in foul territory before running a full count against Eysaman and issuing the 24th walk of the game.

Eysaman’s walk was the 10th allowed by Mountie pitchers. Patrick Shepardson struck out eight batters and walked eight over six innings and Mannuzza issued the final two free passes. Joe Gantz pitched a complete game for Ilion, walking 14 batters and hitting one while striking out 12.

Little Falls, which managed three hits and none after the fourth inning, carried a 3-2 lead before Mannuzza relieved Shepardson at the start of the seventh. Brett Leon singled with one out, stole a base and scored on a two-out single by Mike McAvaney.

Mountie Ryan Dawley singled in the game’s first run in the first inning. Little Falls added one run in the third and another in the fourth for a 3-0 lead. Shepardson walked, stole second and finished his trip around the bases on two passed balls in the third inning. Travis Carney singled in the fourth and scored on a single by Shepardson.

Ilion struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Matt Soullas singled, stole a base and scored on a single by McAvaney. A bases-loaded walk eventually forced McAvaney across the plate with one out and Little Falls got out of the inning with an unconventional double play. Justin Gookins lined out to shortstop Dylan Blumberg and Blumberg attempted to double Ilion’s runner off at third base. The throw got away from Mannuzza at third base but he retrieved the ball in time to throw the runner out at the plate.

Little Falls (7-7, 3-4 CSC-I) left 14 runners on base, 10 of them in scoring position. They left the bases loaded in the first and fourth innings and stranded at least one runner in every inning except the second.

McAvaney was the only player on either team with two hits.

The Mounties and Golden Bombers also played an extra inning when they met earlier this season at Veterans Memorial Park. Little Falls was a 4-3 winner at home against Ilion April 21 and the Mounties are now 2-2 in extra innings games.

Little Falls plays under the lights at home Thursday against Mohawk and Friday against Herkimer.
