CLINTON, N.Y. — A Little Falls native has been selected as the new executive director of Section III Athletics by the organization’s executive committee. Section III President Carol Moss announced John Rathbun’s appointment at the section’s annual awards dinner at Skenandoa Country Club.
Rathbun succeeds Paul Harrison. He becomes the fourth executive director in the 60-year history of the New York State Public High School member organization.
“Through years of service of promoting athletics in the Central New York region, Rathbun has earned the trust of the board of this remarkable organization,” Moss said.
Rathbun has been employed by the Syracuse Chamber of Commerce for the past 10 years as director of sports development with the responsibility for attracting state, regional and national sporting events and athletic conventions in an effort to increase tourism in Syracuse and Onondaga County. He also oversaw the Syracuse Sports Corporation which is an organization charged with establishing Syracuse as a premier center for all sports and benefiting the greater Syracuse area by serving as a liaison between national governing bodies and community groups that control necessary facilities used for competitions and events. He is the past president of the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame and past president of the Syracuse Sunrise Rotary Club. Rathbun is also an active basketball official for IAABO Local Board No. 38 and National Junior College Athletic Association.
In 2007, Rathbun was honored by National Association of Sports Commission with its Outstanding Communication and Advertising Award. The award recognizes outstanding impact on a community through sporting event marketing and promotions.
“It was very difficult to judge this award because so many cities produce such high quality events,” said Nashville Sports Council President Gary Alexander who was one of the award judges. “The group from Syracuse, with the leadership of John Rathbun, has distinguished themselves by their marketing efforts that illustrates their comprehensive strategy to reap the benefits of sports tourism in their region.”
“John is a proven leader with a commitment to our mission,” said Harrison whose retirement is effective June 30 after two years of service as executive director of Section III. “He understands the balance required to provide consistency, equitable and fair opportunities to all participating schools and their student athletes.”
Rathbun resides in DeWitt with his two children, Jessica and Stephen.
Section III Athletics’ purpose is to provide a governing body which shall organize and administer the interscholastic athletic programs for member schools of Section III of the NYSPHSAA.
