MOHAWK VALLEY CC 4, GLOUCESTER COUNTY COLLEGE 1
The Mohawk Valley Community College Hawks entered the NJCAA’s Division III tournament as the top-ranked team and exited Sunday as national champions for the second time.
The Hawks (21-1-1) topped New Jersey’s Gloucester County College 4-1 in the title match Sunday after beating Holyoke Community College of New Hampshire in the quarterfinals Thursday and shutting out Minnesota’s Anoka-Ramsey Community College 2-0 in Friday’s semifinals.
Mohawk Valley took a 2-0 lead in the first half of the final at Tompkins Cortland Community College. Former Center State Conference standouts Meghan Gaffney (Sauquoit Valley) and Meghan Carlo (Oriskany) scored in the first half. Brianna Georgia was credited with the Hawks’ third goal and Mia DeGironimo, the tournament’s most valuable player, sealed the win with a goal on a long direct kick.
Samantha Getman contributed an assist in the championship match and was honored as the top offensive player at the tournament. She had the winning goal against Holyoke on a corner kick and scored both Mohawk Valley goals against Anoka-Ramsey. Carlo and Gaffney both scored in the quarterfinal match and were named to the all-tournament team along with goalkeeper Vanessa Jecko, a former Gaffney teammate at Sauquoit Valley. Jecko made 10 saves Sunday.
Mohawk Valley previously won the national championship in 2003. The Hawks finished the 2012 season with a 15-match unbeaten streak (14-0-1) and won their last 10 matches after tying Clinton Community College on the road Sept. 29.
Among the contributors to Mohawk Valley’s national championship run were Meagan Laymon and Madison Vitale, a pair of freshmen from Ilion. They were among the 10 former CSC players on the Hawks’ roster.
