UTICA, N.Y. — An Ethiopan ended a decade of Kenyan dominance at the Utica Boilermaker Road Race Sunday as Terefe Maregu won the final dash to the finish line and was crowned champion of the 31st annual 15-kilometer race.
Maregu completed the course in 44:17 with Kenyan Peter Kamais and Ethiopian countryman Girma Tola tight on his heels and the rest of the lead pack — Kenyans Daniel Kipkoech and MacDonard Ondara — close behind.
Top honors in the women’s division also went to an Ethiopian with Ashu Rabo Kasim running 35th overall and just ahead of former champion Catherine Ndereba of Kenya in 50:39 on an overcast morning in Central New York.
Abebe Yimer of Las Vegas ran 11th overall was the top American finisher among 9,773 runners who crossed the finish line in front of the West End Brewing Company at the intersection of Whitesboro and Varick streets. Neal Holtschulte of Rochester was the top New York runner in 19th place. Sam Morse of Camden gave Oneida County one runner in the top 50 at the county’s largest sporting spectacle while David Putney of Newport was the first Herkimer County finisher in 174th place.
Among the other high finishers with ties to the area were Mike Trendell of Oriskany Falls, a former Center State Conference cross country and track and field standout at Waterville, who placed 60th and Fort Plain native Scott Barton who ran 141st overall. Ron Hughes of Walworth, one of coach Al Knapp’s former Brookfield High School basketball players, placed 152nd.
Much of the post-race buzz was generated by a mechanical malfunction that left runners without chip times for the race. The mats the record runners passing over the starting line did not collect complete information and left the event with only gun times — the elapsed time from the start of the race until a runner crosses the finish line. Chip times allow for crowding at the start of the race where runners can take more than 10 minutes to officially begin the course after the race begins.
Krige Schabort of Cedartown, Ga., and Jacqui Kapinowski of Point Pleasant, N.J., won the men’s and women’s divisions of the Boilermaker wheelchair race while Canadians Amanda and Mark Collins of Burlington, Ontario, were the lone competitors in a wheelchair team event; Mark Collins ran the course while pushing Amanda in her racing chair.
